Are You Ready for the Vortex?



What is CelloVortex?


  • CelloVortex brings together the cyclonic energy of high school cellists from across Michigan who meet for 4 rehearsals during the school year, spiraling towards a final concert in May.


Who is Eligible?


  • If you a high school cellist aged 13-18 looking to get caught in a musical whirlwind, the Vortex is pulling you in.

Touchdown Locations for 2025-26


  • Saturday, October 25, 1-5 PM: (Midland High School, 1301 Eastlawn Dr, Midland, MI 48642)


  • Saturday, November 22, 1-5 PM: (Rockford High School, 4100 Kroes St NE, Rockford, MI 49341)


  • Sunday, January 11, 2-5 PM: (Okemos High School, 2800 Jolly Rd, Okemos, MI 48864)


  • Saturday, March 28, 1-5 PM: (Novi High School, 24062 Taft Rd, Novi, MI 48375)


  • Concert Day - Saturday, May 9: (School of Music, CMU)
  • Rehearsal: 1-3 PM
  • Concert: 4-5 PM


  • Specific rehearsal locations for each high school be provided.


What if I Have a Conflict?


  • We get it. Life can be turbulent!  Each student is allowed to miss one rehearsal due to a conflict, with the exception of the concert day dress rehearsal.


  • If a student needs to be late for one more rehearsal, that can be approved on a case-by-case basis.


Is there a Cost?


  • There is no cost to join CelloVortex. Students just need to be committed to the flow.


Repertoire


  • Vortex for Two Cellos by Martin Torch-Ishii & Eric Moore arranged for cello choir by CMU's own Gavin Frody.


  • The rest of the Vortex music is TBA.


  • Music will be sent out in advance of the first rehearsal.


How to Join the Swirl


  • If you are ready to join the tornado of tone, fill out the registration form at the bottom of this page.



  • Send a short video of your playing (not for acceptance, just for part assignments and seating) to fiste1ja@gmail.com.


  • CelloVortex liability release paperwork will be sent to you before the first rehearsal.


  • CMU liability release paperwork will be sent to you before the final concert.


Deadline to Register


  • Please register by October 4.
